Azad Jammu and Kashmir
Full Form of AZJ
What is AZJ?
Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AZJ) is a self-governing administrative territory under the control of Pakistan, located in the western part of the larger Kashmir region. In the Indian context, it is consistently referred to as Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJ&K) because India considers the entire former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir as its integral territory. The acronym AZJ appears in diplomatic documents, United Nations resolutions, and Indian political discourse when discussing the unresolved Kashmir dispute. It is also used by international media and human rights reports to distinguish the Pakistan-administered area from the Indian-administered Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. For Indian competitive examinations like the UPSC Civil Services and State PCS, understanding the nomenclature and political status of AZJ is crucial, as questions often test knowledge of India's official position regarding the region. The area has its own president, prime minister, and legislative assembly, but its external affairs and defense are managed by Pakistan. The Line of Control separates AZJ from Indian Jammu and Kashmir. The acronym is not internally used by Indian authorities, but it appears in cross-border discussions and analyses.
