What is AWM?

The AWM, or Arctic Warfare Magnum, is a bolt-action sniper rifle developed by the British company Accuracy International. It is chambered for the powerful .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge, which provides exceptional long-range accuracy and terminal performance. In the Indian context, the AWM is employed by the Indian Army's special forces, including the Para (Special Forces) and the Ghatak platoons, for counter-sniper operations, target interdiction, and precision fire support in mountainous and low-intensity conflict zones. The rifle is particularly valued in the high-altitude regions of Siachen and Kashmir, where its reliability in extreme cold and its ability to engage targets at distances exceeding 1,500 metres give a tactical edge.
