Arteriovenous Malformation
Full Form of AVM
What is AVM?
An arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is an abnormal tangle of blood vessels connecting arteries directly to veins without a capillary network. This congenital condition disrupts normal blood flow and can occur anywhere in the body, most commonly in the brain or spine. In India, AVMs are a significant concern in neurosurgery and interventional radiology, with cases often presenting in young adults. Diagnosis typically involves imaging techniques like MRI, CT angiography, or digital subtraction angiography. Treatment options include surgical resection, embolization, or stereotactic radiosurgery, depending on the size and location of the malformation. AVMs are a frequent topic in Indian medical entrance exams such as NEET PG and AIIMS, where questions focus on their pathophysiology, clinical features (e.g., seizures, headaches, hemorrhage), and management. Awareness among the general population remains low, but advancements in Indian healthcare facilities have improved detection and outcomes. The condition requires multidisciplinary care, often involving neurologists, neurosurgeons, and radiologists in tertiary care centers across the country.
