Full Form of AVF
What is AVF?
The Armoured Vehicle Factory (AVF) is a key production unit under the Ordnance Factory Board of the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. Located in Avadi, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, it is one of the largest and most advanced facilities for manufacturing armoured fighting vehicles and main battle tanks in South Asia. AVF is responsible for the production, overhaul, and upgrade of tanks such as the Arjun MBT, T-90 Bhishma, and other armoured platforms used by the Indian Army. Established in 1965, the factory has played a pivotal role in India's defense indigenization, supporting the 'Make in India' initiative by reducing dependency on foreign imports. The factory integrates cutting-edge metallurgy, welding, and assembly lines, and collaborates with DRDO and CVRDE for technology development. AVF’s contribution is critical for the Indian Army’s mechanized forces, especially during modernization programs. For students preparing for defense or engineering exams, AVF is a relevant example of India's defense industrial base and self-reliance efforts. Military aspirants often encounter AVF in general knowledge and current affairs sections.
