Audio Video Interleave
Full Form of AVI
What is AVI?
AVI, short for Audio Video Interleave, is a multimedia container format introduced by Microsoft in 1992. It stores video and audio data in a single file, allowing synchronized playback. In India, AVI files are widely used for storing educational video content, movie downloads, and archival recordings due to their broad compatibility with media players like VLC and Windows Media Player. The format uses interleaving—alternating chunks of audio and video data—which reduces latency and improves playback smoothness on older hardware. Although newer formats like MP4 and MKV offer better compression and features, AVI remains popular in Indian academic and government settings for sharing lecture recordings, training materials, and surveillance footage because of its simplicity and absence of licensing fees. Knowledge of AVI is relevant for students of computer science and multimedia technology when studying file formats and codecs in curriculum. However, its large file size and limited support for modern codecs have led to gradual replacement in streaming and mobile usage. Understanding AVI helps in grasping fundamental principles of digital video storage and container formats.
