Autonomous Unmanned Tactical Aerial System
Full Form of AUTAS
What is AUTAS?
The Autonomous Unmanned Tactical Aerial System, or AUTAS, is an advanced drone platform designed for autonomous surveillance, reconnaissance, and target acquisition in modern warfare. In India, AUTAS is being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with private sector partners to enhance the Indian Army's battlefield intelligence capabilities. This system leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning to navigate complex terrains, avoid obstacles, and make real-time tactical decisions without human intervention. AUTAS is primarily used in high-risk border areas such as the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir and the northern frontiers, where it provides persistent aerial monitoring without endangering human pilots. The system is also being evaluated for counter-insurgency operations in left-wing extremism affected regions. For defence aspirants preparing for exams like the Combined Defence Services (CDS) and National Defence Academy (NDA), understanding AUTAS is crucial as it represents the future of autonomous warfare technology that India is actively pursuing. Its integration with existing command and control networks allows seamless data sharing with ground troops and command centres, making it a force multiplier in asymmetric conflicts.
