Anti-Terrorism Squad
Full Form of ATS
What is ATS?
The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) is a specialised police unit in India dedicated to combating terrorism, insurgency, and organised crime. Established by state governments, the most prominent units include the Maharashtra ATS, Gujarat ATS, and Uttar Pradesh ATS. The ATS operates under the state police framework but coordinates with national agencies like the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Intelligence Bureau (IB). Its responsibilities include intelligence gathering, counter-terrorism operations, bomb disposal, cyber surveillance, and investigation of radicalisation networks. Since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, ATS units have been strengthened with advanced training and equipment. They are frequently deployed during high-profile events, communal tensions, and in regions affected by left-wing extremism. For competitive exams like UPSC, State PCS, and police recruitment, the ATS is a key topic under security and law enforcement. Questions often focus on its formation, notable operations, and its role in the country’s internal security architecture.
