Anti-Submarine Warfare
Full Form of ASV
What is ASV?
Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASV) refers to a branch of naval operations focused on detecting, tracking, and neutralizing enemy submarines to protect surface ships, submarines, and coastal assets. In the Indian context, ASV is a critical component of the Indian Navy’s maritime security strategy, especially given the growing submarine fleets of neighboring nations. It involves a combination of sensors (sonar, radar), weapons (torpedoes, depth charges), and platforms (surface ships, submarines, maritime patrol aircraft, helicopters). ASV operations are conducted in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) to safeguard sea lanes, naval bases, and exclusive economic zones. The Indian Navy regularly exercises ASV tactics during joint drills such as Malabar and Milan. For defence aspirants, understanding ASV principles is important for exams like the Combined Defence Services (CDS) and Navy entrance tests. The field continues to evolve with stealth technology and autonomous underwater vehicles playing a larger role in modern ASV.
