Area Rural Development Fund
Full Form of ARDF
What is ARDF?
The Area Rural Development Fund, commonly abbreviated as ARDF, is a financial reserve that commercial banks in India are required to maintain and deploy for promoting rural development across underserved areas of the country. Introduced as part of the priority sector lending framework, ARDF ensures that a portion of bank credit flows specifically into agriculture, cottage industries, rural infrastructure, and small-scale enterprises operating outside metropolitan zones. The Reserve Bank of India, in coordination with NABARD, monitors the deployment of these funds to ensure that lending reaches genuinely rural borrowers rather than being concentrated in semi-urban branches. Banks operating in areas with insufficient branch networks are often directed to contribute a percentage of their deposits into this fund. ARDF plays a significant role in bridging the credit gap between urban and rural India, supporting self-help groups, microfinance institutions, and farmer producer organisations. For aspirants preparing for banking examinations such as IBPS PO, SBI Clerk, and RBI Grade B, ARDF is a frequently asked term under the priority sector lending and rural banking syllabus.
