Agricultural Refinance Corporation Board
Full Form of ARCB
What is ARCB?
The Agricultural Refinance Corporation Board, commonly known as ARCB, was a key financial institution in India established to support agricultural lending and rural credit. Set up in 1963 under the recommendation of the All India Rural Credit Survey Committee, the board played a pivotal role in providing long-term refinance assistance to banks and financial institutions extending credit to the agricultural sector. It worked closely with cooperative banks, commercial banks, and state-level institutions to strengthen the rural credit structure across the country. The primary objective was to ensure that farmers had access to adequate and affordable credit for modernising agriculture and improving productivity. In 1975, ARCB was reorganised and renamed the Agricultural Refinance and Development Corporation, which was later merged with NABARD in 1982. NABARD continues to carry forward the legacy of agricultural refinance in India. For students preparing for competitive exams such as RBI Grade B, NABARD Development Assistant, and UPSC, understanding ARCB is important as questions about the evolution of agricultural credit institutions frequently appear in the economy and finance sections.
