Aerodrome Protection Zone
Full Form of APZ
What is APZ?
The Aerodrome Protection Zone (APZ) is a designated area surrounding an airport that is regulated to ensure safety by preventing obstacles, structures, and activities that could interfere with aircraft operations. In India, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) mandate the creation of APZs around all licensed aerodromes. These zones are defined by specific dimensions based on the runway category and approach procedures. The APZ restricts construction of tall buildings, towers, and other obstructions, and also controls activities like bird attracting land uses or fireworks. It is a critical component of obstacle limitation surfaces (OLS) and is used during airport planning, environmental impact assessments, and land use management. Any violation of APZ regulations can lead to penalties or denial of clearances for nearby projects. For students preparing for UPSC Civil Services or airport engineering exams, understanding the APZ concept is essential for questions on aviation safety and regulatory frameworks. The zone ensures that aircraft can safely take off, land, and navigate around airports, thereby protecting both passengers and people on the ground.
