What is ANP?
Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP) is a hormone secreted primarily by the atrial muscle cells of the heart in response to increased blood volume and stretching of the atrial walls. It plays a critical role in regulating blood pressure and fluid balance by promoting natriuresis (sodium excretion) and diuresis (water excretion) through the kidneys, thereby reducing blood volume and lowering blood pressure. In India, ANP is a standard topic in the NCERT biology curriculum for class 11 and is frequently tested in medical entrance exams such as NEET, AIIMS, and JIPMER. It is also covered in undergraduate MBBS physiology courses. The hormone acts as a counter-regulatory mechanism against the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) and helps maintain cardiovascular homeostasis. ANP binds to receptors in the kidneys, blood vessels, and adrenal glands, and its levels can be measured clinically as a biomarker for heart failure. For Indian students aspiring to careers in medicine and life sciences, understanding ANP is essential for grasping the body's intricate control mechanisms. It is also referred to as atrial natriuretic factor (ANF).
