What is CNP?

A Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse who has completed specialized education and clinical training beyond the basic nursing degree. In India, the CNP role is relatively new but rapidly growing, especially in large multi-specialty hospitals and corporate healthcare chains. CNPs are authorized to perform comprehensive health assessments, diagnose common illnesses, prescribe medications (within defined protocols), and manage chronic conditions. They work closely with physicians, often in outpatient departments, emergency rooms, or critical care units. The Indian Nursing Council and various state nursing councils have started recognizing nurse practitioner programmes, primarily in critical care and family health. CNPs help bridge the gap between doctor availability and patient demand, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.
