Amylase
Full Form of AMY
What is AMY?
Amylase is an enzyme produced mainly by the salivary glands and the pancreas. It plays a crucial role in breaking down starch into simpler sugars during digestion. In India, the amylase blood test is widely used in hospitals and diagnostic labs to detect conditions such as acute pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, or mumps (which affects salivary glands). The test measures the level of amylase in the blood or urine and is often ordered alongside lipase for more accurate diagnosis. Medical students preparing for NEET PG, MBBS, or nursing exams in India frequently study amylase as part of biochemistry and pathology modules. The normal reference range for serum amylase varies by laboratory but is typically between 30 and 110 U/L. Elevated levels may indicate pancreatic inflammation, while low levels can be seen in chronic pancreatitis or liver disease. Amylase is also used in forensic science and food processing industries, but its primary medical relevance in India remains in diagnosing gastrointestinal and pancreatic disorders. With the rising prevalence of lifestyle-related pancreatic issues in urban Indian populations, understanding amylase is important for both healthcare professionals and patients.
