Agricultural Marketing Service
Full Form of AMS
What is AMS?
The Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is a department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare in India. It is responsible for regulating and promoting the marketing of agricultural produce across the country. AMS formulates market policies, enforces grading and standardization of farm commodities, and provides market intelligence to farmers and traders. It also implements schemes like the National Agricultural Market (e-NAM) to create a unified national market. Established to reduce post-harvest losses and ensure fair prices, AMS operates through various directorates such as the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection (DMI). The service is used by state agricultural marketing boards, cooperative societies, and commodity exchanges. For competitive exams like UPSC, IBPS-AFO, and state agriculture officer exams, understanding AMS functions is important under the topic of agricultural marketing reforms. The AMS also publishes weekly market reports and conducts training programs for farmers on quality certification and export readiness, thereby strengthening the entire supply chain from farm gate to consumer.
