What is ALB?

Albumin is a protein synthesized by the liver and is the most abundant protein in human blood plasma. It plays a critical role in maintaining oncotic pressure, transporting hormones, vitamins, and drugs, and preventing fluid from leaking out of blood vessels. In the Indian healthcare system, ALB is a standard parameter in routine blood tests, especially liver function tests (LFT) and kidney function tests (KFT). It is commonly ordered by physicians for patients presenting with symptoms like swelling, jaundice, fatigue, or unexplained weight loss. The test is widely available in diagnostic labs across urban and rural India, often as part of comprehensive health checkup packages.
