All India Judicial Service
Full Form of AJS
What is AJS?
The All India Judicial Service (AJS) is a proposed centralized recruitment system for appointing district judges in India, aiming to standardize the selection process across all states. Currently, district judges are recruited by state-level public service commissions, leading to variations in criteria and procedures. The AJS would function similarly to the All India Services (IAS, IPS), with officers being recruited by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and then allocated to states. The concept has been debated for decades, with proponents arguing it would improve judicial efficiency, reduce delays, and bring uniformity in standards. However, concerns about federal autonomy and language barriers have stalled its implementation. The AJS is often discussed in legal academic circles and appears in law-related examinations such as UPSC Law Optional and CLAT PG. It remains a significant yet unfulfilled reform in India's judicial landscape.
