AHIstands for

Apnea-Hypopnea Index

What is AHI?

The Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) is a medical metric used to quantify the severity of sleep apnea by measuring the average number of apnea and hypopnea events per hour of sleep. Apnea refers to complete cessation of airflow for at least 10 seconds, while hypopnea is a partial reduction in airflow accompanied by oxygen desaturation or arousal. In India, where lifestyle diseases and obesity are on the rise, sleep apnea has become a significant health concern. The AHI is primarily used in polysomnography (sleep studies) to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and guide treatment decisions such as the use of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy. It is also referenced in research and clinical guidelines by Indian sleep medicine societies. An AHI below 5 is considered normal, 5–15 indicates mild apnea, 15–30 moderate, and above 30 severe. For medical students and doctors preparing for exams like NEET PG or USMLE, understanding the AHI is essential for pulmonology and neurology-related questions.

AHI — frequently asked questions

What is the full form of AHI?
AHI stands for Apnea-Hypopnea Index, a measure of sleep apnea severity.
How is AHI measured in a sleep study?
AHI is calculated by dividing the total number of apnea and hypopnea events during sleep by the number of hours slept, usually recorded via polysomnography.
What is a normal AHI range?
A normal AHI is below 5 events per hour; 5–15 is mild, 15–30 moderate, and above 30 is severe sleep apnea.
