Adult Education Kendra
Full Form of AEK
What is AEK?
Adult Education Kendra (AEK) refers to community-based centers established under the Government of India's adult education programs, such as the National Literacy Mission and later the Saakshar Bharat Abhiyan. These centers are set up in villages and urban slums to provide basic literacy, numeracy, and life skills to adults who missed formal schooling. The role of AEK in India is crucial for promoting lifelong learning and empowering marginalized populations, especially women and Scheduled Castes/Tribes. Since the 1990s, AEKs have been operated by state literacy missions, NGOs, and local bodies. They often function in the evenings or at times convenient for working adults. Instruction is in the local language, and curriculum includes functional literacy, legal awareness, health education, and vocational training. For competitive exams like CTET, UGC NET Education, and state teaching eligibility tests, AEK is a key concept under the 'Adult and Continuing Education' syllabus. Understanding the structure and impact of AEKs is important for questions on educational policies in India. The centers have significantly contributed to raising India's literacy rate from 52% in 1991 to over 77% today, though challenges like inadequate funding and volunteer retention persist.
