Automated Clearing House
Full Form of ACH
What is ACH?
ACH stands for Automated Clearing House, an electronic funds transfer system used for processing bulk payments in India. Operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under the name National Automated Clearing House (NACH), it enables banks, companies, and government agencies to make large-volume, low-value payments such as salaries, pensions, dividends, interest, and subsidy transfers directly to beneficiaries' accounts. ACH works on a batch processing model, meaning transactions are collected and settled in bulk at scheduled intervals, unlike real-time systems like NEFT. In India, ACH is widely used for recurring payments like utility bills, loan EMIs, and insurance premiums through mandate-based debits. It is also the backbone for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes, ensuring subsidies reach citizens directly. The system supports both credit and debit transactions. Understanding ACH is important for aspirants of banking exams like IBPS PO and RBI Grade B, as questions frequently appear on payment systems. ACH has significantly reduced the reliance on cheques and cash, promoting a digital economy. With the rise of UPI, ACH remains relevant for bulk settlement and corporate payments.
