Antyodaya Anna Yojana
Full Form of AAY
What is AAY?
Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) is a central government sponsored food security scheme launched in 2000 by the Government of India. It targets the poorest of the poor families, providing them with highly subsidized food grains (wheat and rice) at a nominal price of ₹2 per kg for wheat and ₹3 per kg for rice. The scheme operates under the National Food Security Act, 2013, and is implemented by the Food Corporation of India through the Public Distribution System. It is specifically designed for the most destitute households, including landless agricultural laborers, rural artisans, and families affected by HIV/AIDS or leprosy. As of the latest allocation, over 2.5 crore households benefit from AAY. The scheme is crucial for combating hunger and malnutrition in India, especially among the poorest sections. In exams like UPSC, State PCS, or SSC, AAY is often asked in direct questions about poverty alleviation and food security programs. It serves as a key example of targeted welfare delivery in India, demonstrating the government's commitment to the poorest households.
