Village Task Force

What is VTF?

The Village Task Force, commonly abbreviated as VTF, is a grassroots-level committee established in villages across India to manage public health emergencies and monitor local development activities. Primarily activated during the COVID-19 pandemic, the VTF was formed under the guidance of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to strengthen rural surveillance, contact tracing, and vaccination drives in remote areas where healthcare infrastructure was limited. Each VTF typically comprises panchayat members, ASHA workers, ANMs, and local volunteers who coordinate with district health officials. Beyond COVID-19, the framework has been expanded to address issues like vector-borne diseases, maternal health, sanitation, and disaster preparedness at the village level. The task force reports directly to the District Task Force, creating a structured chain of command from village to state level. In competitive exams such as UPSC, state PSCs, and staff nurse recruitment, questions on rural health governance structures including the VTF appear regularly.
