Venous Thromboembolism
Full Form of VTE
What is VTE?
Venous Thromboembolism, commonly abbreviated as VTE, refers to a medical condition where blood clots form in the deep veins, usually in the legs, and may travel to the lungs causing a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. It encompasses two related conditions, namely deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, which together represent a major cause of cardiovascular morbidity worldwide. In India, VTE is increasingly recognised as a significant public health concern, particularly among hospitalised patients, post-surgical cases, and individuals with sedentary lifestyles or prolonged immobility. Indian hospitals routinely screen high-risk patients and administer prophylactic anticoagulants to prevent clot formation. The condition is commonly encountered in departments of internal medicine, cardiology, oncology, and orthopaedics, especially following joint replacement surgeries. Awareness drives by the Indian Council of Medical Research and various state health departments have helped improve early detection rates across both urban and rural settings. For students preparing for NEET-PG, AIIMS, or civil service medical optional papers, understanding VTE pathophysiology, risk stratification, and anticoagulation therapy remains an essential clinical topic.
