Vehicle Registration Number
Full Form of VRN
What is VRN?
A Vehicle Registration Number, commonly abbreviated as VRN, is a unique alphanumeric code assigned to every motor vehicle registered in India. It is issued by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) of the respective state where the vehicle owner resides. Every two-wheeler, car, commercial vehicle, or public transport bus operating on Indian roads must have a valid VRN displayed on its number plate at the front and rear. The VRN typically contains a state code, district or RTO code, and a unique series of letters and digits, making each vehicle individually identifiable across the country. It plays a crucial role in road tax collection, insurance processing, traffic violation tracking, and vehicle theft investigations. The VRN is also linked to the Registration Certificate, or RC, which serves as legal proof of ownership. In India, the transport department uses the VRN to maintain a centralized database through the VAHAN portal, helping enforce emission standards and road safety rules. When purchasing a new vehicle, the dealer applies for a VRN on behalf of the buyer through the local RTO. For competitive exam aspirants, awareness of transport-related terms like VRN, RC, and DL is helpful in the general awareness section of SSC, banking, and UPSC exams.
