What is VPX?
Virtual Path Cross-Connect, commonly abbreviated as VPX, is a telecommunications switching technology used within Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks to route data efficiently between multiple virtual paths without demultiplexing the full cell stream. In simpler terms, it functions as a high-speed switching mechanism that directs bundled virtual channels through predefined routes, significantly reducing processing overhead and improving overall network performance. In India, VPX technology was widely deployed by telecom service providers during the late 1990s and early 2000s, particularly by BSNL and MTNL, to support broadband, leased line, and enterprise connectivity services across major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. The technology played a crucial role in establishing India's early digital backbone before being gradually replaced by MPLS and IP-based packet-switched networks. Although not in active large-scale deployment today, VPX remains an important topic in telecommunications engineering curricula across Indian polytechnics and engineering colleges.
