What is VPQ?
Variable Power Quality refers to the comprehensive assessment and measurement of variations in electrical power supply parameters, including voltage levels, frequency stability, harmonic distortions, flicker, and transient disturbances that deviate from ideal sinusoidal waveforms. In India's rapidly expanding and modernising power sector, VPQ is a critical concept studied extensively in electrical engineering programmes and applied by power utilities, industrial facilities, renewable energy developers, and research institutions. The term finds wide application in power quality analysis, where engineers evaluate the stability, reliability, and cleanliness of electricity supplied to consumers, especially in regions facing challenges like voltage sags, harmonic distortions from heavy industrial loads, and integration issues with solar and wind power systems. Indian engineering colleges, particularly those offering B.Tech and M.Tech programmes in Electrical Engineering, include VPQ-related topics in their power systems, power electronics, and renewable energy curricula.
