Village Organization
Full Form of VOG
What is VOG?
Village Organization, commonly abbreviated as VOG, is a community-based rural institution formed at the village level to empower local communities and facilitate grassroots governance. It serves as a federated body that brings together multiple Self Help Groups (SHGs) within a village, acting as a collective platform for social and economic decision-making. In India, VOGs play a significant role in implementing flagship rural development programs such as the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), also known as DAY-NRLM, and various state-level poverty alleviation schemes. They function as intermediaries between the government, banks, and rural households, helping women access credit, training, and welfare benefits. VOGs are particularly active in states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha, where the SHG movement has strong institutional roots. Members collectively plan livelihood activities, resolve disputes, and monitor local development projects, strengthening Panchayati Raj institutions from below. For aspirants preparing for UPSC, State PSC, or rural development examinations, understanding the structure and function of VOGs is essential as questions frequently appear on rural governance frameworks.
