What is VKM?
Videsh Kaamgar Morcha, commonly known as VKM, is a national-level trade union federation in India dedicated to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Indian migrant workers employed overseas. Established under the broader left-leaning trade union movement in India, VKM works to address the challenges faced by lakhs of Indians working in Gulf countries, Southeast Asia, and other parts of the world. The organisation actively campaigns against exploitation, unpaid wages, unsafe working conditions, passport confiscation by employers, and contractual fraud that often traps workers in abusive employment situations. It also extends legal aid and rehabilitation support to returnee migrant workers and their families back home in India, helping them resettle after facing hardships abroad. VKM collaborates with international labour bodies, embassies, and human rights organisations to push for stronger protective laws and bilateral agreements for overseas Indian workers. The body regularly conducts awareness drives and pre-departure orientation programmes in migrant-sending states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Andhra Pradesh. It also publishes reports highlighting systemic labour violations in destination countries. For competitive exam aspirants, questions on Indian trade unions and labour welfare bodies occasionally appear in general awareness and current affairs sections of UPSC, SSC, and banking examinations.
