What is VKD?

Vyavasaya Karshaka Dharakaratha, commonly abbreviated as VKD, is a flagship savings-cum-financial assistance scheme introduced by the Government of Andhra Pradesh to support the farming community. Under this initiative, eligible farmers deposit a fixed monthly amount into a special VKD account, and the state government contributes an equal matching amount, effectively doubling the farmer's savings over a defined period. The accumulated corpus, along with the government contribution and applicable interest, is paid out to the farmer at the end of the term, helping them meet agricultural expenses, repay loans, or invest in better inputs. The scheme is implemented through cooperative and commercial bank branches across rural Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and beneficiaries are identified through revenue and agriculture department records. VKD plays a significant role in promoting a habit of thrift among small and marginal farmers who often lack access to formal long-term savings instruments.
