Vehicle Inspection Report
Full Form of VIR
What is VIR?
Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) is an official document issued by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) or authorized inspection centers in India after a thorough examination of a vehicle's condition, roadworthiness, and compliance with safety and emission standards. The VIR plays a vital role during vehicle registration, re-registration, transfer of ownership, fitness certification, and insurance claim processing. In India, the report typically covers details like chassis number, engine condition, brake efficiency, tyre wear, body integrity, and pollution under control (PUC) status. It is mandatory for commercial vehicles and older private vehicles seeking fitness renewal. The document is also required when a vehicle is being transported from one state to another or when applying for an NOC from the RTO. The VIR helps authorities prevent the registration of stolen or tampered vehicles and ensures that only roadworthy vehicles ply on Indian roads. For candidates preparing for RTO or SSC exams, understanding the VIR process and its documentation requirements is important as questions frequently appear in general awareness sections.
