Verbal Intelligence Quotient
Full Form of VIQ
What is VIQ?
Verbal Intelligence Quotient, commonly abbreviated as VIQ, is a standardised measure of a person's verbal reasoning ability, language comprehension, and communication skills. In India, VIQ is widely used in school assessments, educational counselling, and competitive examination preparation to evaluate how well an individual can understand, analyse, and use written or spoken language. Schools across CBSE, ICSE, and state boards often rely on psychological testing tools such as the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children to calculate separate verbal and performance IQ scores. Career counsellors in India use VIQ scores to guide students towards streams and professions that align with their linguistic strengths, such as law, journalism, teaching, civil services, and content writing. The concept is frequently discussed in UGC NET, CTET, and other teacher eligibility examinations where understanding of intelligence measurement forms an important part of the psychology syllabus. VIQ differs from Performance IQ in that it specifically focuses on vocabulary, verbal reasoning, and language-based problem solving rather than non-verbal or spatial tasks.
