What is VHP?
Vishva Hindu Parishad, commonly known as VHP, is a prominent Hindu nationalist organisation in India founded on 29 August 1964. It was established with the primary objective of consolidating the Hindu community and protecting Hindu interests, culture, and heritage. The organisation works closely with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and is considered one of the Sangh Parivar affiliates. VHP is actively involved in promoting Hindu religious and cultural activities, organising pilgrimages, and advocating for the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, which became a major national movement. Headquartered in New Delhi, VHP has branches across India and in several countries with significant Hindu populations, including the United States, United Kingdom, and parts of Southeast Asia. It frequently engages in social service activities such as running schools, hospitals, and disaster relief programs. The organisation has been a subject of political debate and controversy due to its ideological stance. VHP is frequently mentioned in Indian competitive exams covering topics like polity, history, and current affairs, particularly in questions related to Hindu organisations and socio-political movements.
