Verified Gross Mass
Full Form of VGM
What is VGM?
Verified Gross Mass, commonly abbreviated as VGM, refers to the total weight of a packed shipping container including the cargo, packaging materials, pallets, and securing dunnage. In India, VGM carries significant importance in the maritime trade sector following the implementation of the SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) convention by the International Maritime Organization, which made VGM documentation mandatory from July 2016. The Directorate General of Shipping, operating under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, enforces VGM compliance across all major Indian ports including Mumbai, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Mundra, and Kochi. Shippers, exporters, and freight forwarders must submit accurate VGM details to the shipping line before container loading, and failure to comply can result in the container being denied boarding. The weight is calculated either through Method 1, which involves separately weighing the cargo and adding the container's tare weight, or Method 2, which requires weighing the entire packed container at once. This verification process helps prevent maritime accidents caused by misdeclared or overloaded containers. VGM concepts regularly appear in customs broker licensing exams and logistics certification programs across India.
