Village Forest Committee
Full Form of VFC
What is VFC?
The Village Forest Committee (VFC) is a local governance body established under the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006, commonly known as the Forest Rights Act. It is constituted at the village or hamlet level to protect, regenerate, manage, and harvest forest resources in a sustainable manner. The committee is formed through a resolution passed by the gram sabha and typically includes elected representatives, traditional village elders, and members from scheduled tribe communities living in the area. VFCs play a vital role in granting community forest rights, including the right to use, manage, and conserve forest land for traditional purposes. These committees are particularly significant in tribal-dominated states like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, where forest-dependent communities rely heavily on minor forest produce, timber, and grazing land for their livelihoods. The committees prepare micro-plans for forest patches, prevent illegal felling and encroachment, and ensure equitable distribution of forest benefits among villagers. They also coordinate with the Forest Department to resolve disputes, conduct afforestation drives, and maintain biodiversity records. Understanding the role of VFC is essential for aspirants preparing for UPSC Civil Services, State PSC, and Forest Range Officer examinations, as questions on community forest management and tribal rights frequently appear in general studies papers.
