Village Development Plan
Full Form of VDP
What is VDP?
The Village Development Plan, commonly abbreviated as VDP, is a structured framework used in India to plan and execute developmental activities at the village level. It is prepared through participatory approaches involving the local community, gram panchayat members, and various government functionaries to identify the needs, priorities, and resources required for holistic rural development. The VDP typically covers sectors such as agriculture, irrigation, education, healthcare, sanitation, road connectivity, livelihood promotion, and social welfare schemes. It plays a crucial role under flagship programmes like MGNREGA, the Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan, and several state-level rural development missions where bottom-up planning is mandated. District Rural Development Agencies and block development officers use the VDP to consolidate demands from individual villages into larger cluster and block-level plans. For students preparing for competitive examinations such as the UPSC Civil Services, SSC, state public service commissions, and various banking exams, understanding the concept of VDP is important because questions frequently appear on Panchayati Raj institutions, rural planning mechanisms, and the implementation of centrally sponsored schemes.
