Full Form of VDJ
What is VDJ?
VDJ refers to Variable, Diverse, and Joining, which are the three types of gene segments involved in V(D)J recombination, a fundamental genetic process that takes place in developing B cells and T cells of the immune system. During this process, different V, D, and J gene segments are randomly combined and rearranged at the DNA level to produce an enormous repertoire of antibodies and T-cell receptors, enabling the human body to recognise and fight millions of different pathogens. This mechanism forms the molecular foundation of adaptive immunity and explains how a limited set of genes can generate almost limitless antibody diversity. In India, V(D)J recombination is an essential topic in the MBBS curriculum, particularly within microbiology and biochemistry courses, and is frequently asked in NEET PG, AIIMS, and JIPMER entrance examinations. It is also taught in detail in postgraduate biotechnology and immunology programmes at institutions such as JNU, AIIMS Delhi, BHU, and the IITs. Research into VDJ recombination carries strong clinical relevance for diagnosing primary immunodeficiencies, certain leukaemias, and lymphomas across Indian hospitals.
