Video Compact Disc
Full Form of VCD
What is VCD?
Video Compact Disc, commonly known as VCD, is a digital optical disc storage format designed to hold video content, particularly movies and music videos. Introduced in the early 1990s, it uses MPEG-1 compression to deliver about 74 to 80 minutes of standard definition video along with stereo audio on a standard 12 cm CD. VCD holds a special place in Indian popular culture, as it was the primary medium through which Bollywood films, regional language movies, and South Indian cinema reached households across the country, especially in smaller towns and rural areas where DVD players and internet streaming were not yet common. Video compact discs dominated Indian households, neighbourhood video parlours, and small-town theatres from the mid-1990s until the late 2000s, gradually being replaced by DVDs and later by digital streaming platforms. The format was also widely duplicated, making affordable entertainment accessible to millions of Indian families during that era. VCD is often discussed in Indian school curricula and competitive examinations under topics like digital storage media, optical disc technology, and data formats, making it a relevant term for students preparing for general knowledge and computer awareness sections of various tests.
