Value Added Network
Full Form of VAN
What is VAN?
Value Added Network, commonly abbreviated as VAN, refers to a privately owned and managed data communication network that provides enhanced or value-added services such as data formatting, storage, and electronic exchange between businesses and government agencies. In India, VANs play a critical role in sectors like banking, customs clearance, port logistics, and taxation, where secure and standardized electronic transmission of documents is essential. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs uses VAN infrastructure to connect traders, customs houses, and banks for electronic payment of duties and filing of import-export documents. Banks and financial institutions rely on VANs to facilitate secure fund transfers, cheque truncation, and inter-branch communication. The concept became especially relevant in India after the introduction of electronic data interchange (EDI) systems in the 1990s for customs and trade. For competitive exams such as IBPS, SBI, SSC, and various government recruitment tests, understanding VAN is useful under the computer awareness and banking technology sections.
