Ultimate Zone Rating
Full Form of UZR
What is UZR?
Ultimate Zone Rating, commonly abbreviated as UZR, is an advanced defensive metric used in Major League Baseball to evaluate a fielder's overall defensive performance. The statistic measures how many runs a player saves or costs his team compared to an average fielder at the same position, considering factors such as range, arm strength, errors, and ability to turn double plays. Developed within the sabermetrics community, UZR breaks defensive contributions into components including range runs, arm runs, and error runs, then combines them into a single cumulative figure expressed in runs above or below average. In India, UZR is not widely known because baseball remains a niche sport with limited domestic following, but it has gained modest visibility through sports analytics courses, fantasy sports platforms, and the growing interest in global sporting frameworks. The metric is widely referenced on analytics platforms like FanGraphs and is used by coaches, broadcasters, and fantasy baseball players worldwide. While not directly tested in Indian competitive examinations, UZR is occasionally mentioned in sports management and data analytics curricula offered by Indian universities.
