Uzhavar Peruvizha
Full Form of UZP
What is UZP?
Uzhavar Peruvizha, commonly abbreviated as UZP, is a flagship agricultural extension programme launched by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2010. The term translates to Farmers Festival in English and was conceptualised to bridge the gap between agricultural research institutions and the farming community at the grassroots level. Conducted every Friday in village panchayats across the state, the programme brought together farmers, agricultural scientists, officers from the agriculture and horticulture departments, and representatives of allied sectors such as animal husbandry, fisheries, and sericulture. The primary objective of UZP was to enhance crop productivity, introduce modern technologies, and provide direct guidance to farmers on soil health, water management, pest control, and market access. Each session also included field demonstrations, distribution of farm inputs, and interactive discussions where farmers could voice their grievances. Though the scheme was later restructured and its funding merged with other state initiatives, its outreach model influenced similar farmer engagement efforts in several other states. For candidates preparing for Tamil Nadu PSC, TNUSRB, IBPS, and other competitive examinations, UZP remains an important topic under Tamil Nadu state schemes, rural development, and agricultural policy.
