Universal Windows Platform
Full Form of UWP
What is UWP?
Universal Windows Platform, commonly known as UWP, is a software development framework created by Microsoft that allows developers to build applications capable of running across multiple Microsoft-powered devices. Introduced in 2015 alongside Windows 10, UWP provides a unified API surface, a common app model, and a single packaging format that enables apps to run smoothly on desktops, tablets, Xbox consoles, HoloLens, and IoT devices. In India, UWP has been particularly relevant in the booming IT and software development sector, where numerous companies in cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune have developed enterprise applications, productivity tools, and educational software using this framework. Indian developers often use programming languages such as C#, C++, and JavaScript along with XAML markup to build UWP apps. The Microsoft Store serves as the primary distribution channel for these applications. While Microsoft has since shifted focus towards WinUI and the Windows App SDK, UWP remains an important topic in computer science curricula and various technical competitive exams that test knowledge of Microsoft development technologies.
