Ultraviolet A
Full Form of UVA
What is UVA?
Ultraviolet A, commonly abbreviated as UVA, refers to a specific band of ultraviolet radiation with wavelengths ranging from 315 to 400 nanometres, making it the longest wavelength segment within the UV spectrum. Unlike UVB rays, UVA penetrates deep into the dermis layer of human skin and is primarily responsible for skin ageing, tanning, and long-term photo damage. In India, where tropical sunlight remains intense across most regions for much of the year, awareness about UVA protection has grown significantly due to rising cases of pigmentation issues and skin disorders. It is frequently discussed in dermatology clinics, sunscreen manufacturing standards, cosmetic product labelling, and environmental science studies. The Bureau of Indian Standards mandates UVA protection ratings on sunscreen products sold in the country. Students preparing for competitive examinations such as NEET, JEE, and various state-level science Olympiads often encounter questions on ultraviolet radiation classifications, making this acronym academically important across Indian science curricula.
