UTZ (Us Truly Zorg) – Sustainable Farming Certification Program
Full Form of UTZ
What is UTZ?
UTZ is a globally recognised sustainability certification programme that promotes responsible farming of coffee, tea, and cocoa. The name UTZ originates from the Mayan word meaning "good," reflecting the programme's commitment to better agricultural practices. The certification was officially launched in 2002 and has since merged with the Rainforest Alliance in 2018 to create a stronger unified sustainability standard. In India, UTZ certification holds particular relevance in the tea estates of Assam, West Bengal, and the Nilgiri hills, as well as coffee plantations in Karnataka and Kerala, where growers adopt eco-friendly cultivation methods, improved worker welfare, and traceable supply chains. Indian producers benefit from premium market access in Europe and North America, where UTZ-labelled products command better prices. Major Indian tea brands and exporters have actively pursued UTZ compliance to remain competitive in global trade. While not a routine exam topic, awareness of such certification programmes is occasionally included in commerce, agriculture, and environmental studies syllabi at the undergraduate and competitive examination level.
