What is UTV?
UTV, or United Television, refers to UTV Software Communications, one of India's most prominent media and entertainment conglomerates. Founded in 1990 by entrepreneur Ronnie Screwvala along with Zarina Mehta and Deven Khote, the company began as a television content producer and rapidly expanded into broadcasting, film production, digital media, and interactive gaming. UTV became a household name across India through its popular television channels including UTV Movies, UTV Action, UTV Stars, UTV Bindass, and UTV World Movies, offering diverse entertainment across multiple genres. The company produced and distributed numerous Bollywood films, several of which became major box-office hits and earned international recognition. UTV also pioneered interactive gaming content in the Indian market during the early 2000s. In 2012, The Walt Disney Company completed its full acquisition of UTV Software Communications, integrating the brand into Disney India operations. The UTV brand has since been gradually phased out as Disney unified its Indian media businesses. For students preparing for business, media studies, or general knowledge competitive exams, UTV is frequently cited as a leading case study in Indian media consolidation and the growth of homegrown entertainment companies.
