Under the Gun
Full Form of UTG
What is UTG?
Under the Gun (UTG) is a poker term used to describe the player who acts first in a betting round, positioned immediately to the left of the big blind dealer button. In Texas Hold'em and other community card poker variants, the UTG player must make their decision before any other player at the table, making it one of the most disadvantageous and challenging positions. In India, the term has gained significant popularity with the rapid rise of online poker platforms such as Adda52, PokerBaazi, Spartan Poker, and 8Bit Poker, where millions of Indian players engage in real-money card games daily. The UTG position requires a tight and disciplined playing style because the player has no information about how their opponents will act later in the betting round, forcing them to play only premium hands. Many professional Indian poker players, including those who compete in international tournaments, refer to this position as the toughest seat at the table. UTG is commonly discussed in strategy forums, YouTube tutorials, and coaching content aimed at Indian poker enthusiasts. While not part of standard academic examinations, the term appears frequently in gaming events held across Goa, Sikkim, and Nagaland.
