Urban Renewal Programme
Full Form of URP
What is URP?
The Urban Renewal Programme (URP) is a government-led initiative focused on revitalising and modernising ageing urban areas through planned redevelopment, infrastructure upgrades, and improved public services. In India, URPs are typically implemented at the state and municipal levels, targeting congested city cores, dilapidated housing clusters, and under-serviced neighbourhoods that require comprehensive intervention. These programmes combine physical infrastructure renewal with social components such as affordable housing, sanitation upgrades, green spaces, and connectivity improvements through roads and public transport networks. URPs are usually executed through partnerships between urban local bodies, state housing boards, and central funding agencies, often drawing support from schemes like the Smart Cities Mission, AMRUT, and PMAY. They involve detailed planning surveys, land-use restructuring, rehabilitation of affected residents, and phased redevelopment over several years. Indian cities including Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad have witnessed major urban renewal projects under various URP frameworks. The concept frequently appears in examinations for UPSC Civil Services, SSC, banking, and state public service commissions, particularly under topics like urban governance, planning, and sustainable development.
