Unit of Measurement
Full Form of UOM
What is UOM?
A Unit of Measurement (UOM) is a standardised quantity used to express the magnitude of a physical property such as length, mass, time, or temperature. In India, the UOM system is governed by the Standards of Weights and Measures Act, 1976, which mandates the use of the metric system based on the International System of Units across all trade, commerce, and legal transactions. The Legal Metrology Act, 2009 further strengthens the enforcement of standard units, requiring every packaged commodity sold in India to display its quantity in specific UOM such as kilograms, litres, or metres. Units like kilogram, metre, litre, and degree Celsius are used daily in markets, factories, schools, and government offices across the country. Indian students preparing for competitive examinations such as SSC, UPSC, and banking exams often encounter questions related to fundamental and derived SI units, base quantities, and unit conversions. Understanding UOM is essential for fields including engineering, medicine, commerce, and scientific research, as it ensures consistency, accuracy, and fairness in communication and trade both domestically and internationally.
