What is UMA?
Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) is a computer memory design in which the CPU and the GPU share a single common pool of system memory rather than having separate dedicated VRAM. This approach eliminates the need to transfer data between distinct memory spaces, which significantly improves performance and reduces latency in graphics-intensive and parallel computing tasks. In India, UMA is a key concept taught in computer engineering and electronics courses at IITs, NITs, and other technical universities, forming part of the syllabus for competitive exams such as GATE CSE, UGC NET, and various PSU recruitment tests. The architecture is widely used in modern mobile SoCs from companies like Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Apple, which power the majority of smartphones sold in the Indian market.
