What is UKD?
Uttara Kannada, commonly abbreviated as UKD, is one of the most picturesque districts in the Indian state of Karnataka. Situated along the western coast, the district lies between the Arabian Sea and the lush Western Ghats, giving it a unique geographical identity. Its administrative headquarters is Karwar, a coastal town that also serves as a major naval base for the Indian Navy. UKD covers an area of around 10,291 square kilometres and is known for its dense forests, cascading waterfalls, sacred temples, and pristine beaches such as Gokarna, Murudeshwar, and Karwar beach. The district has historical importance as a trade and shipping centre, with references to the region found in ancient texts and foreign traveller accounts. Economically, it relies on agriculture, fishing, forestry, and tourism, with spices, rice, and coconut being key products. The official language spoken here is Kannada, though Marathi and Konkani are also widely used. UKD frequently appears in competitive examinations such as UPSC, KPSC, and various banking exams where candidates are asked about Indian districts, their headquarters, and geographical features.
