What is UDN?

Uttar Dinajpur, commonly abbreviated as UDN, is one of the districts located in the northern part of the Indian state of West Bengal. Established as a separate district in 1992 after being bifurcated from the erstwhile West Dinajpur district, it shares its borders with Bangladesh on the east, the state of Bihar to the west, and other West Bengal districts including Dakshin Dinajpur, Malda, and Kishanganj. The district headquarters is situated in Raiganj, which also serves as a major commercial and educational hub in the region. Uttar Dinajpur covers an area of approximately 3,140 square kilometres and is known for its rich cultural heritage, agricultural economy, and diverse population comprising Bengalis, Rajbanshis, and tribal communities. The district plays a significant role in Indo-Bangladesh trade relations due to its strategic border location, with several border trade points facilitating commerce between the two nations. Administratively, it is divided into nine community development blocks, two municipalities, and numerous gram panchayats that govern local affairs and development initiatives. The major rivers flowing through the region include the Mahananda and its tributaries, which support irrigation and agriculture.
